WAYS OF DOING THINGS:
Глагол to examine, имеющий значение "изучать что-либо тщательно, подчеркивает цель такого рассмотрения - для того чтобы придти к какому-либо решению". В отличие от него нижеследующие глаголы, сохраняя общее значение глагола to examine - "рассматривать что-либо, подвергать что-либо рассмотрению", содержат разные семантические компоненты, которых нет в глаголе to examine, или не имеют тех, которые есть в глаголе to examine, так, например, глагол to look at не предусматривает ни тщательности рассмотрения, ни цели решения рассмотренного вопроса. Глагол to analyse предусматривает другую цель - цель понимания и подчеркивает детальность, большую тщательности действия, глагол to check подчеркивает цель проверки, правильность результата и т. д.
Глагол to look at/have a look at/take a look at - "изучать что-либо (мысли, идею, план) особенно для того, чтобы принять решение, что в дальнейшем делать": we need to look very carefully at ways of improving our efficiency нам надо тщательно рассмотреть пути дальнейшего повышения эффективности нашей работы; the bank is looking at a number of investment opportunities банк рассматривает ряд возможных инвестиций; I think we should have a look at the whole issue of women's right я считаю, что нам надо рассмотреть всю проблему прав женщин; let's take a close look at the system of communication давайте более подробно рассмотрим всю систему средств связи.
Глагол to analyse - "тщательно и детально рассмотреть что-либо, главным образом вопрос или проблему, для того чтобы понять эту проблему": we need to identify and analyse all the company's problems before we can solve them нам надо сначала определить и проанализировать все проблемы, с которыми столкнулась компания, и только потом мы сможем их решить; the computer analyses the data sent by the satellite компьютер подвергает анализу все данные, посланные спутником.
Глагол to study - посвятить много времени изучению со всей тщательностью чего-либо, чаще всего изучению документа, плана или проблемы: I've not had time to study these proposals, so I can't comment on them у меня не было времени для изучения этого предложения, и потому я не могу о ней высказываться; I studied the map for a long time trying the most suitable route for our journey я долго изучал карту, пытаясь выбрать наилучший маршрут для нашего путешествия.
Глагол to inspect - рассматривать, инспектировать, проверять, тщательно рассматривать для того, чтобы установить удовлетворяет ли это установление нормам, нет ли их нарушений, особенно, если это входит в должностные обязанности: the building is regularly inspected by a fire safety officer это здание постоянно проверяет сотрудник службы пожарной безопасности; I got of at the car to inspect the damage я вышел из машины, чтобы установить каковы повреждения; make sure you inspect the goods carefully as soon as you receive them обязательно проверьте/осмотрите товар, как только вы его получите; young plants are regularly inspected for disease insects саженцы регулярно осматриваются на предмет появления болезнетворных вредителей.
Глагол to check - проверять, чтобы убедиться, что все в порядке (что сделано правильно, находится в безопасности или в удовлетворительном состоянии): their passports were checked by imagination officer of the airport в аэропорту сотрудник иммиграционной службы проверил их паспорта; check the building for structural damage осмотрите здание и проверьте нет ли повреждений в его конструкции; would you check the tyres for me? не проверите ли вы шины моей машины?; all written work should be checked over for spelling mistakes всю письменную работу надо проверить на предмет орфографических ошибок.
Глагол to scrutinize - очень тщательно рассматривать, пытаясь обнаружить недостатки, особенно, если это входит в должностные обязанности: it is the duty of the Treasure secretary to scrutinize every aspect of government spending в обязанности государственного казначея входит тщательная проверка всех правительственных расходов; the policeman scrutinized our faces with a suspicious eye полицейский с подозрением вглядывался в наши лица
